🖥️System Compatibility

Software Requirements

To run Retro Diffusion, you first need to have the latest version of Aseprite (at least 1.3.2). You can get the latest version by updating an existing copy, purchasing Aseprite, or compiling it yourself.

Additionally, Retro Diffusion requires the host machine to have both Python and Git installed and accessible. The specific versions and requirements are covered in the next section.

Hardware Requirements

Because the Retro Diffusion extension runs locally on your own hardware, there are some strict requirements for your computer to ensure that the tool executes properly. Please refer to this chart to ensure that your system is compatible:

Note the difference between "RAM" and "VRAM" as well as the difference between NVIDIA's "GTX" and "RTX" graphics cards.

To determine your system specifications on Windows, follow the short guide below:

Windows

For Windows, all of the information you need is in Task Manager. To open Task Manager, right click on your task bar, and click "Task Manager." Alternatively, press the windows key ( 🪟 ) and search for "Task Manager."

Once you have opened Task Manager, expand it by clicking the "More details" button in the bottom left of the window.

Next, navigate to the "Performance" tab at the top of the window:

From here, you can view all the required information about your system, including CPU, RAM, GPU, and VRAM.

System RAM

You can view the system RAM in the "Memory" section:

The total memory available to your system is displayed in the top right. In this example, the system has 32GB of available system RAM.

GPU Manufacturer and Model

You can view the name and model of your graphics card in the "GPU" section:

The manufacturer's name is listed first, followed by the model version. In this example, the manufacturer's name is "NVIDIA," followed by the model version, "RTX 3090."

GPU VRAM

The "VRAM" is the amount of memory directly available to the graphics card, and is listed in the GPU section of Task Manager:

In this example, we are looking for "Dedicated GPU memory." The total amount available on this example system is 24GB (which, according to the System Requirements Chart at the start of this page, is more than enough to use all the features of Retro Diffusion).

Note:

If you are on Windows, only "NVIDIA" graphics cards are supported.

Linux

Due to the many different distributions and flavors of Linux, there are several ways to determine RAM and VRAM. If you are unsure of your system specifications, please search online for how to find the required information on your distribution.

MacOS

Open the Activity Monitor, and navigate to the "Memory" tab.

You can see the memory information at the bottom of the window. The value relevant for Retro Diffusion is "Physical Memory."

Alternatives

If your computer doesn't meet the hardware requirements, don't worry! You can still use Retro Diffusion on the website!
